The horse meat scandal of 2013 eroded consumer confidence.

ONE in five shoppers are most likely to blame the retailer in cases of food fraud, a new report has found, with confidence in the food chain declining in light of recent scandals.

The Food Fraud Report reveals 72% of consumers believe there is an issue with food fraud in the UK, with only 12% of shoppers saying they have confidence in the European food chain and 7% in global produce.

Frank Woods, retail sector specialist at NFU Mutual, which published the report, said: “There has never been a more important time for tackling food fraud and getting regulation right as we plan to leave the European Union, but Government proposals for where we will get our food from are already under tough scrutiny from industry and consumers alike with concerns over quality.”
