Encouraging signs for Booker

THE latest trading figures published by Booker Group paint a mixed picture with poor tobacco sales taking some of the shine off of solid non-tobacco growth.

Total sales for the 12 weeks to 8 September were up just 1.1%, however non-tobacco sales grew by 5.8% on the previous year, with total growth brought down by a 9.7% decline in tobacco sales.

Due to the planned merger with Tesco, the wholesaler made no forward looking statements to accompany its financial results.

Booker chief exec Charles Wilson (pictured) said: “Booker Group continues to make good progress with like-for-like non-tobacco sales up 6%. Our plans to focus, drive and broaden Booker Group are on track.

“The competition review of the planned merger with Tesco is progressing. We continue to help our retail, catering and small business customers prosper through improving our choice, prices and service.”
