Scottish barbecue season may sound like the start of a joke but despite sometimes dreich weather, the reality is a real sales opportunity for retailers, according to meat supplier Eurostock Foods.
Stephen Allen, chief commercial officer, said that despite a combination of persistent rainfall and lack of sunshine last summer, the summer eating market continues to perform well.
“Without doubt the BBQ season continues to be one of the most popular eating occasions and one which is extending beyond the traditional summer months,” he said.
“Looking ahead to 2017, we regard the BBQ meats category as dynamic and growing, hence our continued focus on product innovation, convenience, quality and value.”
Melanie Higgins, national account manager for disposable barbecue firm Bar-Be-Quick, said that burgers and sausages will always be summer staples, but also suggested retailers would do well to throw some adventurous ingredients into the mix this summer.
“The clean eating trend is set to infiltrate the barbecue market, with people opting for fish, vegetables and vibrant salads and sides,” she said.
“Stores should merchandise traditional barbecue fare alongside more adventurous foodstuffs.”
Stocking the right products is key but timing is vital and Higgins suggests retailers keep one eye on the weather to ensure they can take advantage of any small window of opportunity.
