Price-marked snack packs

PRICE-MARKED packs have been particularly important to boosting sales in the crisps and snacks category, according to KP Snacks.

Nielsen figures, quoted by the company, show that singles are now worth £64.5m, up 8.4% since last year, while PMP sharing bags are worth £78.9m and growing at 17.8% year on year.

“Retailers should flex their PMP range according to their location, shopper demographics and space available, and make sure they are stocking up on the top-sellers to increase impulsive purchasing,” said Matt Collins, KP’s trading controller for convenience.

“Price-marked, single-serve snacks should be used as a value offering and should be placed at the bottom of the fixture using shelf-edge labelling. Sharing PMPs should be stocked away from singles, and merchandised with multipacks and other take-home groceries where possible, but if space is limited then sharing packs can be merchandised above singles, using ‘value’ barkers to draw attention.”

KP Snacks recently launched a selection of £1 PMPs across four flavours of KP Nuts.

Available exclusively to convenience and independent retailers, the packs come in cases of 12 and include Original, Dry Roasted, Spicy Chilli and Salt & Vinegar.

The company also offers PMPs across McCoy’s top three 35g handy packs – Salt & Malt Vinegar, Flame Grilled Steak, and Cheddar & Onion, all price-marked at 55p.

“PMPs are extremely effective as they communicate transparency on pricing to shoppers in store. However, it is a step that is often overlooked,” said Hena Chandarana, trade communications controller at United Biscuits.

“Offering a wide range of PMPs builds trust with retailers that the retail price is as recommended by the manufacturer and reflects the product’s position in the market.

“We currently have over 40 SKUs available in this format. For example, McVitie’s Digestives 300g and Jacob’s Cream Crackers are now both available in a £1 PMP, Jacob’s Mini Cheddars in a £1 sharing bag.”

Walkers has extended its 39p price-marked pack value snacks range by adding two Monster Munch packs, in Roast Beef and Pickled Onion flavours. The Monster Munch packs join the existing 39p range which includes Cheeseballs, Snaps, Frazzles, Twisted and Chipsticks. Walkers has produced a four-case stacker and PoS materials for the collection.
