Mr and Mrs Rashid receive the top award from Zameer Choudrey and Younus Sheikh.

A Scottish shopkeeper is £10,000 richer this month after being named overall winner of Bestway and Batley’s Retail Development Awards 2014.

Abdul Rashid of Salina Mini Market in New Stevenson, North Lanarkshire, scooped the prize at the wholesaler’s 13th annual awards show at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Hosted by the group’s CEO Zameer Choudrey and Bestway Wholesale’s managing director Younus Sheikh, the event recognised the achievements of Bestway and Batley’s retail customers.
The awards are the culmination of the Bestway Retail Development Programme, which includes workshops in which retailers are challenged to go back to their stores and implement what they’ve learned.
Other retailers who saw success on the night, claiming a share of a £32,000 prize fund, included Ahmet Dursun, of Prego Local in Edinburgh, who was named Scottish winner, and Mohammed Issa MBE, of 1st Stop 2 Shop, Dundee, Scottish runner-up.
