C-STORE shoppers spend some £19.6m a year on haircare, says P&G quoting Symphony IRI –with shampoo taking £10.2m of that. So it’s well worth retailers keeping up to date with latest developments in what is a fast-moving category.

Helen Johnson, P&G haircare brand manager, said: “In the convenience channel, P&G’s Head & Shoulders, Herbal Essences and Pantene are the three biggest brands. Wash & Go also performs well in smaller stores.”
Herbal Essences’ latest NPD is Moroccan My Shine, a range using what the firm sees as one of haircare’s most important ingredients, argan oil. RRP for both shampoo and conditioner is £1.99 for 200ml and £3.79 for 400ml.
The brand has also reissued its Classics shampoos and conditioners to take advantage of nostalgia for the 1990s. And P&G’s Silvikrin is gearing up for its 90th anniversary.
Johnson said: “Silvikrin is a key brand for convenience retailers to be stocking in their health and beauty fixture. This iconic hairspray sits at a price point that is ideal for customers on an impulse or distress purchase. There’s going to be plenty of noise about Silvikrin over the next few months as we celebrate this 90th anniversary, so it’s a great brand to be considering stocking and boosting visibility of in-store.”
With razors and blades worth £9.5m – and shave prep products adding another £4m – male grooming is another important category. Johnson said Symphony IRI figures showed disposables accounting for more than 40% of total blades and razors in the convenience channel versus 30% nationally. She claims the Gillette brand has a 75.3% share of blades and razors within convenience.
