City shop hit by year’s tobacco ban

AN Aberdeen shopkeeper has been banned from selling tobacco for a year after repeatedly selling cigarettes to children under 18.

Shriraj Gindha, who runs Tony’s Newsagent in Victoria Road, Torry, is the first person to be prosecuted under the Scottish Government’s 2010 legislation.
Aberdeen City Council trading standards officers said Gindha sold cigarettes to 16-year-olds three times between October 2011 and August 2013.
Under the Tobacco and Primary Medical Services (Scotland) Act 2010, tobacco retailers must register with the Scottish Government. A local authority can apply to have retailers banned from selling tobacco products if they breach the Act three times in two years.
