Supplies in the snow: checklist

WHILE road closures – particularly to such a key route as the Forth Road Bridge – are difficult for forecourt operators to anticipate and plan for, one challenge that is a little easier to predict in Scotland is severe winter weather.

Heavy snow and ice, in particular, can lead to safety risks on the forecourt for customers, staff and fuel deliveries.

Fuel supplier Jet has prepared a checklist of factors that all forecourt owners should take into consideration when expecting a fuel delivery:

• Is there sufficient grit to allow for a safe delivery and will all areas (including the driver’s immediate working area around the vehicle) be sufficiently gritted?

• Will the site/working area be clear and safe for delivery? Will snow be cleared from delivery area and will manhole lids and locks be free of ice?

• Will the site be prepared for delivery with cones used, for example, to ensure safe access and the site closed for delivery where applicable?

• Are nearby access roads clear of snow and ice so that the tanker can reach the site?
