Biscuits to go

On the go is the big trend in biscuits and sweet bakery lines, according to bake-off and thaw-and-serve products specialist supplier Aryzta Food Solutions.

Aoife Kenny, the company’s head of retail UK, said: “The sweet bakery sector in general is up by 5.9%.

“This is a rapidly growing category, with shoppers seeing sweet bakery as a permissible treat that can be enjoyed as they’re out and about, highlighting how sweet bakery in an on-the-go format provides a significant sales opportunity for retailers.”

She added that research shows that 30% of UK consumers eat sweet biscuits two to four times a day and argued that retailers should stock items seen as high-quality products and the brands that shoppers look for.

The firm’s Milk and Dark Chocolate Chunk thaw-and-serve cookies have a shelf life of 21 days, she said.

Aryzta offers display units for the range, suitable for all stores, with freestanding display units, counter top units and clip on units, which all can help retailers adapt to seasonal demand.

Border Biscuits says it is benefitting by going small.

Brand and sales manager Lesley Ann Gray said: “The snacking market has grown significantly in the last few years due to busier lifestyles creating a demand for consuming food on the go.

“Our luxury mini packs meet this need perfectly, as each pack includes two biscuits from the range in convenient packaging, making them portable and ideal for all snacking occasions.”

She said Border had seen a 25% increase in sales of its mini-pack biscuits range since the beginning of 2015.

“This year we are investing in the range with a trade advertising campaign to ensure high visibility and awareness of the product, making it a must-stock range for retailers,” she said.

Border Biscuits mini-packs are available in boxes of 48 or 100 in Viennese Whirls, Divinely Choc Chip Cookies, Crunchy Oat Crummmbles, Butterscotch Crunch and Choc Chip Shortbread varieties.
